Website 3.0!

It took awhile, but we’re finally launching SSA 3.0.  Fortunately good things are happening in the dojo at a much faster pace than the webmaster works.

It’s been awhile since we all caught up so here’s a quick rundown of notable things that happened this past year:

Subfloor installation
Glue, screw, seal

Installed a new subfloor!  Sure the place looked pretty much like it did before we started, but there’s a big difference taking falls on the new floating floor.  Training is safer and healthier for all participants.

Geoff installing hardwood floor
Want this stuff in my place…

Shortened the mat frame and installed hardwood flooring in the front of the dojo. Looks nicer and easier to clean!

Robert breaking window
Love the sound of breaking glass!

Put in a big, noisy fan that pulls lots of air into the dojo.  Getting some fresh air into the space is always helpful and makes for much more comfortable training on the warm days.

Buried in the sand
No secrets buried here…

Kids summer camp at the ocean.  Quite an experience for kids, teachers and parents.  There are stories.  And pictures.  Remember that kids…

Kenta Shimizu seminar
Thank you Kenta Sensei!

Kenta Shimizu, Tendo Ryu dojo cho traveled from Japan to teach a seminar at SSA. It was a unique experience to train with a teacher of exceptional caliber.

Jeremy with nunchaku
Jeremy! No nunchucks!

Budo Tanren debuted.  In this class we teach how to develop a martial body that cultivates stability, power and efficient movement.  These are the basis for developing aiki skills.

And there are  more exciting things to come!

Good things happen at SSA because of the leadership of our board and the significant volunteer efforts of our teachers, students and their family members.  Every effort to help is very much appreciated.

Happy training!

Subfloor Project – dojo is closed April 8, 9 & 10

We have one week left to enjoy the 25+ year old subfloor with broken plywood soft spots, cracked wood supports and powdered foam blocks! Starting Friday, April 8, we’re going to rip out the old floor and build a new sprung floor. The dojo will be closed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 8-10.

We’re still light on Friday volunteers. If cleaning under a decades old subfloor is your thing, we’ve got a gig for you. We’ll even personalize your own N95 dust mask!

Some of you have expressed a desire to donate to the project. Thank you! You can write a check to the dojo or use Paypal from the home page on our website. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization so your donations are tax deductible.

Things we need – a couple of shop vacs, some paint rollers, trays and extension poles.

Students and Instructors – please remove all your personal items like gis and weapons by Monday night. We’ll need the room to stage supplies and materials and move all the dojo furniture into the dressing rooms before we start the rip and tear. Things will get dirty.

The schedule? We have a detailed project plan. Some martial arts folks told me that a fight plan is brilliant until you get hit the first time. Please check the website for updates, particularly if you have volunteered for a late shift.

Congratulations Mike!

Mike UllmannOn February 3rd, Andy Dale awarded Mike Ullmann and Burk Dowell the rank of yondan (4th degree blackbelt) in the art of Xin Qi Shen Dojo Aikijujitsu. “Their skill and dedication to the martial arts is extremely high and sincere.” Since Mike gets up early every Monday, Wednesday and Friday to teach our SSA morning class, we’d certainly have to agree!

Way to go Mike, well deserved!

Going-Away Party for Alex on Sunday the 23rd at 6pm

As many of you have heard, I will be moving to San Francisco for a new job in less than a week, and that means I won’t be training at the dojo or teaching kids classes here anymore! 🙁

This Sunday at 6pm, we’ll have a sort of going-away party so I can say goodbye to you all and you can see me one more time before I take off. Kids, parents, other dojo members and teachers are all invited.

If you want to bring something, you can bring cookies or other treats to share (no peanuts or peanut butter though!), and I will be providing free piggyback rides to all under the age of ten and doing my best to make sure that the kids burn off the excess sugar from said treats. No serious Aikido training will occur during this event!

If you just want to stop by, that would be great, and if you want to stay longer and play and talk, I’d say we could keep this going for an hour or so. Though I’m not sure how long I can keep up the piggyback rides.

I will miss you all very much, and it would be very nice to see you one more time before I go. If you can’t make it, well, I’m sure I’ll be back to visit sometime. 🙂

I hope to see you there!

Alex
